I was inspired to make this webpage after seeing there were many popular online quizzes out there (ie:  www.politicalcompass.orgwww.self-gov.org/quiz.html, franz.org/quiz.htm) that all did a nifty thing of letting people take a quiz and find out where they stood on the political landscape.  The idea was ingenius, since there are so many people out there who don't understand politics and where they stand or even what the different parties mean.

However, after seeing the results for nearly every site, I realized that the tests were misleading.  Nearly everyone would end up with the same exact score [somewhere in the liberal range usually], and only in very rare occasions would anyone score outside of that.  You could retute that by saying that the liberal philosophy is the right one, and more people are liberal then they realize.  But the fact that over 95% of the people ended up in that range proves that it is clearly not the best judge of where people stand (since Republicans control everything, there must actually be people out there with republican philosophy).  After after looking at the questions, its not a surprise.  The majority of the questions are either biased, confusing, or politically irrelevant.

For a while, I thought about the idea of a better quiz, but it wasn't until I saw The 3-line quiz , the first political quiz made with three dimensions, that I was inspired to make my own.  But I thought there were a few mistakes in it however, such as confusing or loaded questions.  And I also thought that the three lines chosen were not three, but actually four or five, and could be branched out even further.  So thats what I decided to do.

I must also point out that, as confusing as it may seem, neither the Democratic or the Republican party is supposed to be partisan when it comes to Paficist/Militarist, although lately Democrats are the Pacifists and Republicans are the Militarists. The same is true when it comes to Authoritarian and Libertarian, as neither party is completely one way or another.

Currently there are 10 different types of things the test can name you as. [Democrat, Hardcore Democrat, Republican, Hardcore Republican, Libertarian, Hardcore Libertarian, Moderate, Traditional Democrat, Neoconservative, and Collectivist].   You will be a Democrat/Hardcore Democrat if you scored as a progressive and a social capitalist.  You will be a Republican/Hardcore Republican if you score as a conservative and a capitalist purist.  You will be a NeoConservative if you scored as a conservative, capitalist purist, and militarist.  You will be a Traditional Democrat if you scored as a progressive, social capitalist, and militarist. You will be a Libertarian/Hardcore Libertarian if you scored as a capitalist purist and a libertarian.  You will be a Collectivist if you scored as a social capitalist and an authoritarian. You will be a moderate if none of the above applied to you.

Republican/Hardcore Republican      Democrat/Hardcore Democrat
Conservative on social issues,               Progressive on social issues,
support Economic freedom.                   support Economic equality.

Libertarian/Hardcore Libertarian       Moderates
Support Economic freedom                   Generally in the middle on the issues
and personal freedom.

Neoconservative                                 Traditional Democrat
Conservative on social issues,                Progressive on social issues
support Economic freedom,                    support Economic equality,
and Militarily aggressive.                        and Militarily aggressive.

      Conservative vs Progressive

If your score was from 0 to 3, you are a social conservative. You believe in traditional values, and care first and foremost about your country, your family, and your religion. You dislike the agenda of the left because you see them as trying to destroy these things.

If you had a score that was from 4 to 8, You are a social moderate. You think the progressive movement is overall well meaning, but sometimes it goes too far. On issues like abortion and affirmative action, you see the negatives of both extremes on the issue. You probably value religion, but at the same time you think it should still stay separate from the government

If you had a score that was from 9 to 12, You are a social progressive. You generally consider yourself a humanist first. You probably think that religion and patriotism go too far in society. You probably consider yourself to be a citizen of Earth first rather than a citizen of your country.

    Capitalist Purist vs
           Social Capitalist

If your score was from 0 to 3, you're a Capitalist Purist.  You believe that the market should be completely free, and that the invisible hand of the market will make sure that the people get what they want and will do it in the most efficient way possible.  You believe in small government, less taxes, and more privatization.

If your score was from 4 to 8, you are a Moderate Capitalist.  You support an economy that is by and large a free market, but has public programs to help people who can't help themselves or need a little help.  Pretty much you believe in the American economy how it currently is.

If your score was from 9 to 12, you're a Social Capitalist, you think that, left to its own, Capitalism leaves a lot of people behind.  You think that Health Care should be free to all, that the minimum wage should be raised, and that the government should provide jobs to all that are capable of having them.  You likely hated the Bush tax cuts, and believe that the middle class has gotten poorer, and the rich have gotten richer over the past several years.  The far extreme of social capitalism is socialism.

    Libertarian vs Authoritarian

If your score was from 0 to 3, you're libertarian (socially).  You think that the government is making way too many unnecessary laws that are taking away our innate rights.  You believe that the government's job is primarily to protect people from harming other people, but after that they should mind their own business, and if we give the government too much power in controlling our lives, it can lead to fascism.

If your score was from 4 to 8, you're a Moderate.  You think that we all have certain inalienable rights that must be protected, but that sometimes laws need to be made to protect the majority's lives or quality of lives.  You might think that the 2nd amendment isn't necessary anymore because letting everyone a gun is extremely dangerous to the community.  You might also be against illegal drug use or public pornography because of its possible harmful effects to society.

If your score was from 9 to 12, you're an Authoritarian.  You believe that that, left to their own, many people will do immoral or harmful things.  You despise drug users, pornography, violence, and all other things that you consider immoral.  You think children need to be protected from seeing these things so it doesn't warp their minds, and that the will of the majority sometimes is more important than the rights of the minority.

         Pacifist vs Militarist

If your score was from 0 to 3, you're a Pacifist.  You are angered that the United States thinks it should dominate the world through its military force.  You think that the only time war is necessary is when we are in direct danger of being attacked.  You also believe the US spends way too much of its money on defense, as we can practically cut it in half and still easily defend ourselves, and use that money to fix all our economic problems.

If your score was from 4 to 8, you're a Moderate.  You think that in very rare occasions, the United States should invade a country in order to make the world better by spreading democracy or ending a tyrants rule.  You also think that defense is very important, and we shouldn't lower the defense budget.  You think that, while the Iraq War probably was a mistake, that we can make the world a better place by sticking with it and spreading democracy in the middle east.

If your score was from 9 to 12, you're a Militarist.  You believe that since the United States has so much power in the world, it has a responsibility to keep the world safe.  You think that if the US does not exert its power in the world, it may eventually lose its power, and that we can not look weak in the face of terrorists, and must take them out where they live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your test questions are misleading /biased/wrong and I want to complain. How do I do it? Just contact me, if you think theres something that could be fixed lemme know. Constructive criticism like "I think you should do such and such" is better then "this part is horrible".

Your quiz says I'm a _____, but I know for a fact that I'm not that. Contact me and let me know. A lot of times people have been told they belong to a specific party, and didn't realize that their beliefs matched up better with another party. Although my quiz has been off a few times, to which I've made adjustments. Also remember it is based on American politics, so it might not give European's what they expected to get.

What about the Green/Socialist/Constitution/etc party? Sorry, I left out fringe parties from my quiz. I don't plan to add a new grouping unless I notice there are a considerable abount of people in a third party, or have similar idealogy that isnt described by one of the current groupings.

Who are the people in those images at the bottom? From left-right, The Republicans are Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, Richard Nixon. The Democrats are Bill Clinton, John Kennedy, Jimmy Carter. The Libertarians are Barry Goldwater, Michael Badnarik, and Ron Paul. The Moderates are Ike Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, and Lincoln Chafee. The Neoconservatives are George W Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld. The Traditional Democrat's are Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Lyndon Johnson

Aren't Neoconservatives just Republicans? Yes and No. Just like Traditional Democrats vs Democrat, they are very similar but not identical. I wanted to distinguish the parties by how they believe during different time periods. The Democratic party used to be the military party and the Republican party the isolationist party, but in the past several years they have switched sides. So it wouldn't be fair to group together the nation building Neoconservatives with the traditional military "last resort" Republicans.

Your quiz only applies to American politics, whats up with that? American politics is what I know, and American voters is my primary audience. Sorry if you are taking my quiz in another country. The test will still work, but because America is generally more right wing than other countries you might get a score that is slightly more to the left than youd expect.
